Julie and Andrew met each other in October, 2006 in the driveway of where they both lived, in the musically thriving city of Somerville, Massachusetts. Without knowing what would become, they hit it off right away. They had the same musical tastes and shared their favorite bands with each other. Not long after that, they realized they were a couple and they dreamt of starting a band together. They started hanging out in that very driveway with a guitar and sang their favorite songs, sometimes creating their own. This was when they discovered Julie's born talent for music.

On August 18th, 2007, they got married and moved to Austin, Texas. While Andrew was working and making just enough for the both of them, Julie stayed home and began officially writing songs. She would come up with a melody in her head, figure it out on the piano or guitar, then add lyrics to it. Andrew would come home to her new song ideas and help find the chords on the guitar. They together would arrange the whole song before recording anything.

Before they began recording, they knew that they didn't want to use the ear-candy features of the computer. They knew they wanted all the main tracks to be performed without "punching-in" to fix mistakes. They knew they wanted all the instruments to be acoustic. And, they knew they wanted real drums, so they bought a cheap, used drumset for $250.

In March 2008, they finally had two songs recorded and put them up on the internet for their friends and family to hear. The outcome was, however, not what they expected. People around the globe discovered the new songs and used them for videos, podcasts, or just simply their ipods.

What started out as a fun thing for this couple to do, has turned into a serious musical endeavor, and they are still cranking out new tunes every month.

To date, they now have two core band members; Ryan Duffie from Boston on guitar and K.C. Hawes-Domingue (formerly of the Austin band, The Push Pins) on Piano/Keyboards. Both agreed to fly to Boston to do their first ever gig in October 2009. They see a European tour in the near future.

Amity in Fame

The band plays powerful acoustic rock that is slightly influenced by metal. Some songs are rather fast and going straight, others are very smooth and atmospheric. The band was founded in May 2008 and one year after already played in front of an audience of 3.000 people. The first album, 'Dinner for One' was released in July 2008 and is a milestone in modern acoustic rock - at least according to the band-members ... well, some of them. It was Jimmy Page himself who said about the band: "'Amity in fame'? Never heard of them!" If you don't want to die dumb like Jimmy Page you have to check out their first album right now! "The Dada Weatherman is Jonathan's folk project, a young songwriter (20) from France, trained piano player but guitar player in the soul (from his own confession).
At the age of 8, he plays his first notes on a toy piano. in 2002, he learns how to play guitar with the classical Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin. Then, he decided to write his own material after he discovered conor oberst's bright eyes Fever & Mirrors. He composed lots of songs in 2004, and the band that would become The Dada Weatherman is formed under the moniker Lost-Minded.
In 2005, things are rushing out when he meets Clement for the band The Wedding Soundtrack. They will share a stage in Paris, and Clement's label Another Record decide to make Lost-Minded appear on its compilation Sweets for the Wild under Creative Commons.
Thanks to this label, Jonathan gets his first radio spins with a constant support.
Fan of his music, Florent Marchet gives him the opportunity of execeptionnal concert in paris as a supporting band in front of 300 seats. On this night of Mars 2007, Jonathan sings alone songs from his first album Hold Your Flower released in 2006.
His influences are Bob Dylan, Arthur Rimbault, Leonard Cohen, Jimi Hendrix, Robert Johnson, Nick Drake, Django Reinhardt, and more recent acts like Devendra Banhart, Conor Oberst and Elliott Smith.

In 2008, Lost-Minded becomes The Dada Weatherman, hommage to Dadaism and a line in Bob Dylan's book Tarantula. Under this moniker, Jonathan just recorded at home his last album, the most beautifully produced to date: The Green Waltz. Strings and brass sections arrangments appear in a gentle and subtle way. 15 folk songs colored with a bluesy guitar play. Luxury and exquisit metaphors. This collection of songs contains elegant melodies and lyrical maturity for a boy that age are.
In addition to the sound, Jonathan is a gifted painter. For every song he wrote, he painted his own vision of them, as well as the album artwork. (Those pictures can be found in the photos section.)"

BIOGRAPHIE

Tous débuts à Chambéry en 1991 suite à la rencontre de Juan, Chang, Lester des Vindicators, The Blob des Slow Slushy Boys. Le groupe suit la mouvance punk des groupes garage de l’époque mais en y rajoutant une touche extrêmement originale surtout par la grande influence de la mythique double compilation de Crypt Records, Jungle Exotica. Les Juanitos sont alors lun des tous premiers combos en France à explorer cette face exotique du rocknroll de série B.

Côté scène : De 1991 à 1993. De nombreux concerts incandescents sont donnés avec un line-up exceptionnel composé entre autres des Juanitas, choristes féminines aux allures de pin ups sexy des 50’s, Lester Mizzi en batteur primitif avec ses seuls tom bass et snare frappés avec des maracas, Pat Calmeron en cellobassiste aux allures de Boris Karloff. C’est en fait après le départ de Lester, en 1995,  que les Juanitos se font connaître sur scène par la France du rock : Juan (chant et orgue), le Blob (surfing guitar), Dave (Groovy Bass), Chang (country guitar) et Jyle Malone (Drums & bongos), c’est la formation Juanitos qui a le plus tourné ; ils partent pour un « Cobra Tour » de 35 dates qui permet aux Juanitos de se faire un nom dans les 5 coins de l’hexagone. Jusqu’en 2000, les Juanitos étrennent les tournées, les concerts dont tout le monde se rappelle, les gros festivals (Bourges, Trans, Biennale de Turin, etc), se font reconnaître de leur pairs (cités par les Cramps dans les interviews) et jouent avec les futurs stars qui débutaient de l’époque (Dyonisos, Sinsemilia, Louise Attaque), et des stars du rock français confirmées (Négresses Vertes, Mano Negra, Kat Onoma, Les Sheriffs, Parabellum, Sergent Garcia et Charlie Oleg !!!), ou avec des potes (Big Boss Man, Bee Dee Kay & the Rollercoasters, Végomatic, Vibrafingers… ). Chang jette l’éponge en 2002. C’est à ce moment que la scène italienne et Robert « I was a yeye girl » Passera (leur ami DJ King of easy listening) réclame les Juanitos our l’Italie, et que des tournées s’enchaînent dans ce pays : soirées NOTTE VIDAL à Bologne réunissant 3000 aficionados de l’exotica, du nu-latino ou autres breakbeats brésiliens alternatifs, de soirées très hype comme NOBLESSE OBLIGE dans les lieux les plus lounge et fashion de Milan, festivals Beats de Piacenza, de Vérone, gigs dans les boîtes branchées 60’s power en Adriatique jusqu’à Bari. Point d’orgue de cette période faste avec un concert à Bobital Terre Neuvas en 2005 ou les Juanitos jouent devant plus  de 20000 personnes ! Souvernir énorme et qu’il faudra refaire…

Côté discographie : Première expérience studio en 1992 avec la sortie d’un 4 titres 45 tours et du disque SurfinMatador chez Larsen. Un succès immédiat parmi la scène rock française : super classements férarock, chroniques dans la presse spécialisée et même Le Monde ou Libération entre autres. Même accueil pour le 2ème album Do the Cobra (1995), toujours chez Larsen records et le 3ème The crazy vibrations of the Juanitos (1997), chez Spirit of Jungle (Papas Fritas, Sweet Apple Pie). Cette série de disques est cloturée par le 4ème album Exotica (2001) qui voit un nouveau style se définir pour eux. C’est la série Soul & Roots, vol.1(2003) et vol.2 (2004) sortie sur leur actuel label Banana Juice qui font rentrer les Juanitos dans une nouvelle phase de leur longue carrière, naviguant entre acid-jazz & soul exité à coups d’orgue de plus en plus présent, funk déjantée et torride, boogaloo survitaminé, reggae roots singuliers rappelant des Jackie Mittoo ou autres Toots, et toujours cette touche exotique si particulière. Ces 2 galettes ont reçu un accueil exceptionnel aussi bien des fans du début, des nouveaux, que de la presse spécialisée ou non, française ou étrangère ! Nous n’oublierons pas de mentionner la parution de titres des Juanitos sur de très nombreuses compilations : Cosmic Trip, Larsen, Kongpilation, Abus Dangereux, Electric Carnival, et United Rockers sortie en 2006 avec ni plus ni moins que les Juanitos que meme niveau que Dick Dale, les Milkshakes de Billy Childish ou Link Wray !

Côté médias : De nombreux titres des Juanitos sont récupérés pour des génériques sur des radios indés ou sur M6 pour les bandes son de reportages d’émissions populaires comme E=m6 ou Ubik sur Arte. Sur cette même chaîne en 1999 le site web des Juanitos a été pris comme modèle lors d’une émission spéciale concernant le rock et internet sur Trax ! Ariel Wizman (Canal +) a placé des titre des Juanitos dans ses playlists sur Radio Nova. On a pu voir les Juanitos en live sur M6 Rennes, M6 Grenoble et M6 Toulouse. Un reportage de 15 minutes, pour la sortie d’Exotica a été programmé sur France 3 en 2000. Un autre du même type a été diffusé sur la TSR (Télé Suisse Romande) pour la participation au printemps de Bourges 1997.

Côté Limbo deluxe : C’est au printemps 2002 que Pierre et Juan unissent leurs forces pour monter le concept Limbo deluxe. Nos 2 lascars issus de la scène pop rock garage chambérienne et nationale, Pierre avec les Lolipopers : grand groupe power pop des 90’s, et Juan from Juanitos. En moins d’un mois (entre un avril et mai 2002) près de 50 titres ressortis des tiroirs par Juan sont montés et les arrangements sont effectués sur une boite à rythmes avec Pierre. Le style Limbo prend petit à petit une allure qui va surprendre jusqu’à ses propres créateurs : une alchimie stupéfiante mélangeant habilement électronique et acoustique aux influences puisées dans un infini de cultures musicales (calypso, rock’n'roll, reggae, son cubano, bossa nova, ragga, gospel, electronica, soul, boogaloo, jazz !) Bref du rarement entendu ! Le premier défi est lancé le 21 juin 2002, puisque c’est sur la Place Métropole de la cathédrale de Chambéry que ces 2 alchimistes vont donner un concert qui restera gravé dans les mémoires. Forts de cette première expérience en live, Pierre et Juan poursuivent le projet en faisant participer leur amis, Reno au saxophone et Michel (Blob from Juanitos) à la guitare wah wah surf (et oui !) pour étoffer leurs concerts ! Une succession de dates s’enchainent tout l’hiver 2003 et voila leur set rodé pour affronter le concert référence jusqu’ici : le challenge des moniteurs à la Plagne devant près de 3500 personnes ! 2h30 de show ultra festif qui ravit la foule et les pompom girls qui les accompagnent sur scène : hallucinant ! Aujourd’hui Limbo deluxe se produit régulièrement dans toute la France et à l’étranger (Suisse, Italie, Allemagne) et touche un public d’horizons musicaux très divers ! Ensuite vers 2006, Le Blob décide de partir à la retraite (musicale)… Les Juanitos et Limbo deluxe restent un peu orphelins d’un guitariste hors pair, c’est alors que viens Manu BVX pour la succession, puis Didier prend la batterie et Limbo deluxe vire la boite à rythme… David from Juanitos viens jouer de la basse avec Limbo deluxe, ainsi que d’autres musiciens, dont d’anciens Juanitos (Chang à la trompette entre autres), David Bonnin à l’orgue Hammond…

Il y a quelques mois, en avril 2009, on a joué à Gayant Expo dans le cadre du Cartel des Mines. Un millier d’étudiants s’étaient donné rendez-vous dans la plus grosse salle au Nord de Paris – oui monsieur ! Et qui d’autre pour chauffer l’ambiance que Cool Cavemen ?!

Et voici qu’après des mois de labeur intense, pour récolter, éditer, découper, monter les images, notre cyber-Kevin nous a préparé un best of des morceaux joués ce soir-là. Au programme aujourd’hui: Pump the Funk Up, premier morceau du set qui a enflammé le public ! Ce sera pour ceux qui n’ont jamais eu l’occasion les Cool Cave’ sur scène un bon aperçu des jeux de scène qui changent du CD… Et pour les autres, ça vous donnera envie de venir nous revoir !

33 years of Bookselling
Twenty-six-year-old Neal and 24-year-old Candy Coonerty bought Bookshop Santa Cruz in 1973. "We were young and dumb," says Neal. "You don't know what you're getting into. it's like that old joke, 'How do you become a millionaire by being a bookseller? Start off being a billionaire.'"

During the '70s and '80s, philosophers, authors, hippies, tourists, adventurers, and a few with, say, loose grips on reality were among those who made Bookshop their headquarters.

The customers were as diverse as the writers. Elderly ladies used to frequent the store, making sure to bring treats for Walt, the fat orange cat who was the store mascot for years.

Crazy or not, the formula worked. Book representatives came from all over came to check the stock, using Bookshop's inventory as a guide to advising other bookstores what to buy..

5:04 p.m., October 17, 1989. The Loma Prieta earthquake. At first, Neal and Candy thought their store wouldn't be a casualty. The reporter didn't know the whole story.

Thirty-nine days after the quake, Bookshop was reborn as "Booktent Santa Cruz." "The feeling of it was real cozy, " Candy says. "But, of course, it was hot in the summer, cold in the winter. It was dusty. There was outdoor plumbing."

Despite the difficulties, Booktent Santa Cruz was able to last the three years it took to open its current incarnation. On November 24, 1992, volunteers again showed up in droves, carrying books to its new location.

So, while Bookshop has faced its fair share of disasters, it is its commitment to you, our friends and neighbors, that has allowed us over 33 years of bookselling.

"We will survive because Santa Cruz is one of the few places where independent bookstores can survive. It's the way people feel about their community," Neal says.
